Do not delay urgent care while comparing prices, applying for support or waiting for a reply. Petfair cannot assess symptoms or decide how urgent treatment is.
Ask for an itemised written estimate, likely extra costs and when the clinic will contact you before going over it. Only the vet can advise what is clinically appropriate or whether anything can safely be staged.
A practice may be able to explain treatment options, deposits, payment timing, a payment plan or local charitable routes. Availability is not universal and terms vary.
Use each organisation’s current eligibility checker or local contact route. Do not assume that receiving a benefit or living nearby guarantees help.
Published prices can help when the procedure, species, scope and timing match. Confirm inclusions and continuity with the clinic; do not switch or delay care without veterinary advice.
Ask whether a written prescription is appropriate. Compare the exact medicine, strength, formulation and whole pack, including the prescription fee, delivery and repeats.
Ask your insurer and clinic about cover, exclusions, excess, co-pay, limits and whether a direct claim is possible. Petfair does not compare or recommend insurance.
Use your own words if you prefer
It is reasonable to say that cost is a concern. These questions ask the veterinary team to explain clinical options; they do not suggest that Petfair knows what can be delayed.

Evidence Petfair can add
Petfair shows exact published prices where held. A missing clinic price stays unknown. Confirm that the procedure and inclusions match, and do not delay urgent or continuing care to compare.
Some practices may offer payment options, but they do not have to and terms vary. Petfair does not compare lenders or recommend credit. If finance is offered, check the APR, interest, fees, monthly payment, missed-payment charges and total amount repayable before agreeing.

Current RCVS guidance says non-emergency treatment should have a written estimate with likely itemised charges, possible complications, follow-up care and VAT. Ask the clinic what payment options it actually offers.
As checked on 1 September 2026, the CMA's substantive remedies Order was still being finalised. Its specific £500 written-estimate threshold and staged compliance dates are future requirements, not current law today.
