Prescription fees explained
Vets may charge a fee to write a prescription. This is separate from the price of the medicine itself, and you pay it to your vet — not the pharmacy. The CMA has announced a cap of £21 for the first written prescription, with phased compliance expected from 2027; larger veterinary businesses are expected to comply before smaller ones.

- Yes. UK law allows prescription pet medicines to be sold online by registered retailers, but only against a valid written prescription from a vet. The retailer must be registered to supply veterinary medicines.
- Do I need a written prescription from my vet?
- For prescription-only medicines, yes — an online pharmacy should ask for a valid written prescription before dispensing. Your vet may charge a fee to write one. Products that are not prescription-only can be bought without one.
- Are online pet pharmacies safe?
- Legitimate UK online pet pharmacies are regulated and must be registered with the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD). Before ordering, check the retailer on the VMD’s online retailer register. Petfair lists retailers we have checked for price; we do not verify each retailer’s registration, so confirm it yourself.
- Why might online prices be cheaper than my vet?
- Online pharmacies often buy in larger volumes and have lower overheads than a local practice, so the same medicine can cost less. You may still pay your vet a fee to write the prescription, so compare the total cost including that fee and delivery.
- What should I compare before ordering?
- Match the exact medicine, strength, form and pack size, then compare the total cost — the pack price, the per-unit price, delivery, and any prescription fee. Also check stock and the retailer’s VMD registration before you buy.
